The Betting Perspective - OTT @ HAM

Ottawa @ Hamilton (-14.5): TOTAL 41.5

The reeling Hamilton Tiger-Cats will try to stop a three-game losing streak, all at home, Saturday afternoon when the Ottawa Redblacks come to the Steel City.

The Redblacks and rookie quarterback Caleb Evans have come back down to earth after a shocking Week 9 victory over the Elks, a win that lifted them out of the CFL basement. Since throwing for three touchdowns and no interceptions in his debut, Evans has chucked just one score and seven picks in his last three games. On the other side of the ball, Mike Benevides' defense continues to hold opposing offenses in check for the most part, the Redblacks haven't given up 30 points in a game since Week 6 against the Lions.

As for Hamilton, the Ticats activated quarterback Dane Evans from the injured list this week but it looks like Jeremiah Masoli will still get the start Saturday versus Ottawa. The Ticats continue to collapse in the fourth quarter at home, Hamilton have been outscored 36-13 in the final frame of the last two games, leading to losses at Tim Horton's Field for the first time since 2018. The defense for Hamilton struggled to make tackles last time out against Toronto, something we hadn't seen since the opening two weeks of the season.

This line is a big spread, no questions about it, but can Ottawa keep this game close enough to have the opportunity late for a backdoor cover? Contrary to the norm, the RedBlacks have struggled more against the East Division in the last little while than against Western opponents. Ottawa are 1-10 against the spread in their last 11 games versus the East.

The Ticats have shown the ability to bounce back after a bye week, Hamilton are on a six-game against the spread run coming off the rest break, four of those ATS wins coming in the Orlondo Steinauer era.

At the end of the day, 14.5 points might be too much to lay with Jeremiah Masoli starting at quarterback. The Ticats offense have struggled to maintain consistency throughout ballgames this season.

Any play in this matchup is a minimal one, ride the Redblacks on the road, getting a boatload of points and hope for another bad fourth quarter from Hamilton.
